Sorry but I could not resist, it seems The Department of Energy is coming out with a ‘cash for clunkers’ type program to encourage consumers to scrap their old cold-boxes in lieu of a new more energy efficient one.
The program that kicks in this fall will offer consumers cash to help buy new home appliances. The federal government has set aside $300 million for the program as part of the economic stimulus plan.
There’s no trade-in required, as in the government’s “cash for clunkers” deal with consumer car trade-ins. But rebate checks will be issued that can be used to cover everything from refrigerators and dishwashers to furnaces and air conditioners. I am waiting for this program to include even more household items like my old 8-track tape deck because I am sure it uses an obscene amount of power.
